Jack Daniels Distillery – Lynchburg, Tennessee

Jack Daniels Distillery – Lynchburg, Tennessee

Lynchburg is the county seat for Moore County which is the smallest county in Tennessee and yet has this world-wide known distillery.  Amusing side note is that Moor County is a dry county and has been since Prohibition days.

The Distillery offers tours for those of you that choose to come and visit.  It’s just a little over an hour outside of Nashville.  You will be able to have a tour with a guide that will tell you the story of the Distillery and about Mr. Jack.

The Distillery is the oldest in the USA, licensed in 1866, and where Mr. Jack crafted his recipe for Old Number 7.  It is also where the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Sippin’ Whiskey is still made today.  Using the pure spring water is available that makes the product as wonderful as many believe it is.  This water flows year-round at 800 gallons per minute at a constant temperature of 56° and is virtually iron free. It’s the reason why the Distillery was located in this spot originally – and why it’s remained there ever since.

Jack began making whiskey at an early age, 13, while living with Mr. Call who was a Lutheran minister in the area.  Mr. Call may have been a minister but he was also a still owner giving Jack the opportunity to learn the craft.  Mr. Call sold his still and devoted his life to the ministry but the young man, Jack, was on the road to becoming a craftsman in distilling whiskey.

While visiting the area you may want to also stop in at Miss Bobo’s boarding house where Mr. Jack took many of his visitors to stay.  The owner, Miss Bobo, died at the age of 102 but the boarding house still stands today.  (Sidenote, Miss Bobo was the  the oldest woman ever to appear on the pages of Playboy Magazine. In an ad for Jack Daniel’s, of course.

Jack went to work early one morning and tried to open the safe.  He couldn’t remember the combination so he kicked it.  This lead to his breaking his toe, getting blood poisoning and dying.  Since he has never married he left his holdings to his nephew who took the reigns and continued on.

The whiskey serves as a key ingredient in many beloved recipes–Honey Barbecue Ribs, Black Bean Dip, Sweet Hot Glazed Shrimp and wicked Creme Brulee a la Jack Daniel’s and more.
