Loretta Lynn Coal Miner’s Daughter Museum - Hurricane Mills, Tennessee
There are few entertainers in the country western world that are better known than Loretta Lynn. Her life story, her voice and her entertaining ability have endeared her to fans for many years. Now you can go and visit her museum and ranch and get to see what made her who she is.
She truly was born in Butcher Holler, Kentucky, one of 8 children who were supported as best they could be with her father working all night in the Van Leer coal mine and farming during the day.
Loretta got married to Oliver Lynn ("Mooney") when she was just 14 years old. She and Mooney had 4 children before Loretta began singing seriously in 1961.
For years she wrote and sang some of the most well know female country songs that carried the messages that Loretta Lynn thought the world should hear. Occasionally they didn’t sit well with the general public but enough liked them to keep her in the spotlight and continuing to perform.
She and Monney established "The Dude Ranch" in 1972. At the time it was a small campground and Loretta’s original Museum located in the Old Grist Mill, Western store and gift shop.
Now "Loretta Lynn’s Ranch" is a full service RV park, has cabins to rent, a swimming pool, playgrounds, canoeing, paddle boats and a mini-theater.
Tours are offered thru the Lynn’s Plantation home, simulated coal mine and her home place of Butcher Holler.
The doors to her 18,000 square foot "Coal Miners Daughter Museum" opened in 2001. It is filled with things from her life in the business and from others that have been friends of hers over the years.
The Old Grist Mill has Loretta’s Doll and Fan Museum as well as the grist Mill Museum and is available to her guests at no admission charge. There are other shops in the area that you may want to pop into to see if there is anything you want to take home to remember your experience by at the Ranch.

My great wish came true several years back when my family was in Tennessee. We stayed at Loretta`s campground and got to see her performance that night. How totally delightful her family members that we got to meet were. I will never forget any of our visit there.I love you– Loretta Lynn !!!——————— From– Faye BAILEY, MASON, TEXAS
What a beautiful place Loretta Lynn has. We spent the day there Sunday, 26, 2009 and it was so peaceful. Of, course, we looked for Loretty, but we didn’t see her. I don’t know how she ever found the place, but the story we were told by the “guide” was that she and Doo were out driving and got lost so this is how they found the plantation. I would highly recommend seeing here “plantation” etc. Thanks Loretta for making it possible for fans to see how you lived, and, OH yes I have toured your cabin in Butcher Holler, and yes, I’m from Ky. and I always go back each yr. (from FL) to see those hills and hollers. Thank you, always a fan of yours.
